Poem

By Suryalaxmi R. I am not the calm river  You think I am I am neither the serene sky that my face reflects. I am the trickle That hops and kicks in it's course Through the stony path. I am the stormy rain Waiting to unleash it all When the time is right. I am the crackling wind That will take you off the guard. I am a jolly stream That will make you flow in it's rhythm. Don't think you know me when you look into my eyes.. I am not the calmness that shows on me..

Revisiting (A quick read short story)

By Suryalaxmi R.  Lata, Satyan and their daughter, Namita were visiting their ancestral home. The house had been locked up for close to four years now after the Grandmother passed away. Lata sent a message to the maid and she reached on time to tidy up the place. Even as the cleaning was going on in the other rooms, Satyan and Lata sat down for tea in the Verandah. Later, Namita too joined them in the chit-chat. “Seems like the tamarind tree was cut down and the bushes around have been cleared off,” observed Satyan. Lata said thoughtfully, “Yes, the place is much different from what we saw on our last visit four years for Onam celebrations.” The Onam celebration Lata remembered was the last time Satyan’s entire family of five brothers came together under one roof. “It was the best get togethers I saw in our family,” said Namita. Satyan and Lata nodded as they sipped their tea. After sometime, the maid called Lata. She could not find the keys to a room a...

Shades Of The City

By Suryalaxmi R.  The bustling city  chooses to stay awake Through the roaming vehicles even in the moonless nights On the muttering terraces of unsettled houses The restless city is  a vagrant boy He counts the lives he can live at once A high collared nice chap and the rustic home guy A practical doer and an erring dreamer The chaotic city  likes to defy rules Feel the thrill of the roaring bikes Trying out the not done and the yet to be done The enduring city   is   mean at heart It rakes and rakes all that it can And lets go the things, not useful, without much thought The glittering city  invites With it’s lit –up, crowded doors The beaming city is   all musical With tunes to sway by and live on In the moving city,  it’s easy to leave things behind It's easy to turn on a new leaf The thick city closes in On you, But You are stranded, darkness-bitten In the music-less corners of the flow...

The Beach Never Disappoints Me

By Suryalaxmi R.                             This is about the time when we visited Alapuzha, my husband’s native. I wished this time we would visit a new place in the region. But no, my hubby dearest once again wished to sea the beach. The beach is where we had been to a number of times after marriage. It was his favourite place and he took me along every time we visited our home. I often complained that we went to the same place again and again.                          It was a cloudy sky in the evening and the chances of the rain increased as we neared the beach. As soon as we parked our bike, it started pouring in no time. We rushed to the shade of a kiosk on the roadside. We barely escaped the down pour and got almost fully wet.. along with others who came from the beach a...

Meeting Guruvayur Shri Krishna- Then And Now

By Suryalaxmi R.                                     You can go to temples with a wish list. You can bribe the deity with offerings or if it's a big budget temple visit, then the pilgrimage is more of a family picnic. Temple visits are what we make of them. It's has happened to me many times that I went to temple with a prayer plan but by the time I was at the sanctum, I got distracted from the real purpose. But over the years I have learnt to treat visiting big temples as just another outing, an exploration in culture, a lesson in architecture and fresco paintings and more often it’s been my way to find connection with my roots. So, came a day when I booked tickets to Thrissur, my home town only for a special visit to Guruvayur ...

Book Review: Mrs Funnybones- By Twinkle Khanna

By Suryalaxmi R.                                            Twinkle Khanna, former actress and a star wife, began her second innings as a writer while she is also an interior designer. She juggles work and a young family of an eleven years old son and a toddler daughter while she has her star mother, mother-in-law, sisters- in- law and many more important people in the backdrop. Of course, the fun relationship she shares with her super star husband, Akshay Kumar is also very interesting.                So Twinkle's book Mrs Funny Bones promises us a sneak-peak into her celebrity life, the motherhood saga and her strong observations about life, world and womanhood. More than anything else she promises loads of humour. So, the big question is -is she reall...
