Have you ever thought of the effect your wall colors have on your mood? Of course, we know that light colors are more pleasing and make the area look larger while the darker colors have opposite effect. But apart from this, there are many aspects you need to know about the radiations from different colors which cause changes in your mood when you are surrounded by them. Here are seven things to know about the relation between colors and the brain.
1

             1. The shades of red like tomato red and crimson are stimulating for senses. They increase the flow of blood and create the appetite. It increases the flow of adrenaline. In the entryway, Red can serve as a memorable and strong first impression. Painted on the walls of the dining room, it increases appetite. That’s is the reason many restaurants have red colors.
Vibrations from red color increase blood pressure and speed up respiration and heartbeat. So that makes it unsuitable for bedrooms. It will interfere with your relaxation. But this doesn’t stop lovers of this color from using it on the curtains or upholstery. Some tinges of red on accessory look perfect. Red evokes conversation also but it is not suitable for rooms where you spend a long time.

2            2. Orange, like red, also stimulates our energies. Although on the walls, we don’t’ use this color in it’s pure form. We use Terra-Cotta, Salmon, Peach, coral and Shrimp that are popular for wall paintings. Peach is perhaps most popular of all these. It is suitable for bathrooms and restful areas. The color has a touch of luxury to it. Orange is associated with warmth and energy, but in a room that faces west, orange colored walls will increase heat. It is apt for exercise rooms.

3             3. Yellow is the color of pleasant sunshine. It is the also the color of “Smilies” i.e. happiness. It is suitable for spaces like entry, halls, and passages. But an entire room colored yellow does not imbibe relaxation as the color exudes energy. So painting one single wall in a room yellow is a not good idea. The other walls should obviously be lighter tones. This color is not suitable for the single color as it promotes emotions like anger. In fact it is observed that babies tend to cry more in rooms with yellow walls.

          4. Green is the earthly color of humility. It’s vibrations are considered most soothing for the nerves of the eye. Green is the combination of yellow and blue. So it has the refreshing qualities of blue and the lively feel of yellow. That’s why green gives out soothing vibrations to our body. It is suitable for kitchen as it is the symbol of health through veggies. In the bedrooms, green gives the right warmth and comfort. The dark shade can also signify luxury when used for upholstery. It is the color that supports concentration, so no better color is suggested for your office space in the house.

                5. Blue is the most relaxing of all colors. It’s aura is very powerful in calming down our nerve cells and creating relaxation. It reduces blood pressure, brings down heart rate and slows breathing. Because of it’s serenity, it is apt for bedrooms and bathrooms. However, it has to be pointed out that a room that does not receive natural light will not be a good host to the light blue shade like pastel blue. Pastel blue should be balanced with warmer hues to avoid too much light appearance. Warmer shades of blue like turquoise are suited for living rooms and family spaces. However certain darker shades of blue create emotions of sadness.

                6.  Purple, in it’s dark shade, is rich and luxurious. It is also a color of royalty and creativity. It imparts depth to the appearance. The lighter versions such as lilac and lavender are soothing and are cooler than pastel blue hue. These light shades of purple bring calmness in the room.  However, it does not really create the tranquil effect on brain cells which makes it unsuitable for bedrooms where the brain needs rest.

7              7.  In a house that has many variations in color scheme, you get an impression of disorganization. Too many colors mean a cluttered effect. Whereas using similar hues and shades create a unity of theme in the house. While experimenting too much with latest trends one should not overlook the basic psychological principles that determine the effects that specific colors will create in the space.
You may not be thinking too much about the color on your walls right now, but the truth is that it does affect you in many ways. Effecting emotions from serenity to anger, colors have powerful radiations that influence our brain cells.

One Year Of Living the New Normal

Written and previously published in April 2021  It has been 24 hours that I cut myself off from my phone and with that from the only social media that I have in it now- Whatsup app, to disconnect from the posts about people needing blood, plasma, beds and oxygen. For the last one week, my network has been buzzing with these kinds of messages and even with forwards of information about where to find the necessities much of which, I doubted, was authentic. It was discomforting and I decided to give myself a day off from all the buzz. And I sat down to simply pen down a few thoughts that have been bubbling inside me since some time in an attempt to make some sense of the situation we are in for more than a year now.  It’s one year now.. More than that that we got introduced to a new way of living (so to say) which most of us (at least, I never did) had no inkling about. A pandemic with such far reaching effects sprouted from somewhere, caught us off guard and continues to keep us...

Why Vagamon Isn’t Just Another Trip To The Hills

While we still had trips that were long postponed and plans that were half failures by now, the first week of January 2020, unfolded with a car ride to Vagamon in Idukki district. Not that we wanted to start the year with travelling but somehow the holidaying mood of year end lingered on us. We had reached home in Alleppey that morning itself. I could have easily avoided this trip but much whimsically, said YES to it.   As happens in case of trips that are neither planned well nor taken too seriously, we started late in the morning from our home in Alleppey with a rough itinerary in mind. My husband, Sree,   was the driver on board as our newly bought car was on it’s maiden drive to hills.   We picked Jijomon, Sree’s buddy, from near his house in Thakazhi which, in itself, is a picturesque landscape with water and fields. I and Manu were the occupants in the backseats while Jijo gave our “driver” company in the front. Since introduci...

Your Hobbies Define You

I had always felt drawn towards art in literature and in painting. Though I was not a prolific writer neither an avid painter, I would scribble and sketch whenever I got time. Studies and work always kept me busy. However, there was a time in my career where I found myself at crossroads. I had to take a break, I could not go to work any longer. While there were others like me who were clueless and empty, I found satisfaction fiddling with my craft items. I made quillings designs. I made newspaper articles like baskets. I aligned my quilling greeting cards on the wall and painted glass bottles. I took to sketching and canvas painting too which kept me very engrossed and busy. There was a sense of peace I got after the completion of these works. A sense of being the creator.              But the most important thing I realized about having a serious hob...
